Senior Vouchers

 

About the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)

  • FUNDED BY: Started in 2001 by USDA, now offered in partnership with the SC Department of Agriculture.

  • DATES: June 1-October 15th

  • BENEFITS AMOUNT: Distributes $50 checks to seniors age 60 or older and within certain income requirements to be used for produce purchase at farmers markets.

  • CAN BE USED FOR: Fresh, unprocessed fruits, vegetables and honey.

  •  ISSUING: In Greenville County, vouchers are given out by local nonprofit Senior Action on a first-come, first-serve basis. One distribution will be on June 1st at Travelers Rest Farmers Market.

  • GOAL: incentivize senior citizens to visit the farmers market and provide healthy produce and honey.

  • Additional facts: Per Willie Nixon III, program coordinator: “In 2023, Greenville County had 710 booklets allocated, in the amount of $35,500.00. There was a 74% redemption rate.”
